Addressing the Lottery Admissions impact on families
In her public comment to the Board of Education, Kerri Baltramaitis called for a policy revision to the vocational school lottery process to prevent the separation of twins and siblings during admissions. Drawing on her extensive background as a vocational student, educator, and administrator, she highlighted the emotional and logistical hardship created when the current "rigid" lottery system admits one child while excluding their twin. Baltramaitis pointed out that other public education entities, such as charter schools, already utilize sibling preference to maintain family unity. She argued that the current policy lacks compassion and common sense, particularly for students with special needs who rely on family support systems. Ultimately, she urged the Board to grant districts limited discretion to make narrowly tailored accommodations for separated siblings to preserve both fairness and family wellbeing.
