Demand and Dedication can not be undermined

In her March 10th, 2025 public comment to the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, AFT Vice President and Educator Toni Bourega underscored the unique demands placed on both teachers and students in vocational programs. She emphasized the significant dedication and consistent attendance required for students to master the specialized skills taught in these hands-on environments. Bourega highlighted the teachers' commitment to providing rigorous, industry-relevant training, and noted that disruptions to student attendance or engagement directly impact the effectiveness of this instruction. She posed a critical question: "What message are we sending to students and educators when we undermine the importance of consistent dedication and attendance in these demanding programs?" This question served to challenge the board to consider the potential consequences of policy changes that might dilute the focused and committed nature of vocational education.
